San Luis Peak 14,014 feet (52nd highest)

Eric, Wade, Holly, Joel (the Frenchman!)

It was an incredible day. The sky was blue, the wind was minimal, the aspens had a few last golden leaves hanging on... wow, isn't God's creation amazing?!? What a blast to share a great day like this with great friends.

The second picture is of two in our party with Organ Mountain as a backdrop.

Check out Gardner Pics & Places (on the side bar) to see trip pictures.

Peak #18 for Wade!
San Luis Peak 14,014 feet (52nd highest)

October 8th, 2005

Route: NE Ridge from Stewart Creek. TR 10,500 feet
The hike is a Class 1 hike. A stroll in the park. Elevation gain 3,600 feet. Round trip 12.3 miles.

Left Colorado Springs shortly after 3am. Long drive! It was 3:17 to the turn off from 50 onto 114 (with wade driving!). I timed it from the trailhead back to the 50/114 intersection and it was 1:15 (with Eric driving!). Lots of driving – this is why San Luis is one of the least climbed 14ers!!

Started hiking at 8:30am, arrived at the summit at noon, making 3:30 for the ascent.
The descent took 2:30.
The GPS said the mileage one way was 7.1 miles, and round trip was 13.5 miles. Obviously some errors in there somewhere, but looks like more than the 12 miles that the book advertised…

Hikers for San Luis were Joel, Holly, Eric and Wade.

Beautiful day!! Starting at 8:30am meant that we were hiking in daylight rather than dark! The route was easy, straight up Stewart Creek. The route info was right on, passing the old cabin at 2 miles, crossing the creek at 3 miles (there was ice on the logs, making for an interesting crossing!), and coming out of the trees around 4 miles.

We experienced some wind as we gained the saddle, but it quickly died out, giving us a gorgeous time on the summit. We spent about 40 minutes up there, enjoying God’s creation, talking, practicing our self-arrests on the one patch of snow that was up there…

As we left the summit at about 12:45pm, the clouds were moving in. They never coved the sun, and they were not threatening rain, but they were there. The return trip went quickly, with one stop to remove some layers. We arrived at the vehicle at 3:15pm! We were moving!

Great day, great friends, great stories shared on the drive home. Holly wins the prize for the most and the best stories!

It was a beautiful day, a wonderful gift from God! As we were resting along the saddle before heading up to the summit, I asked the Lord for a break from the wind. It died down less than ten minutes later, thank you Lord. I was thinking of the disciples in the boat after Jesus calmed the storm marveling that the wind and waves obey Him. It was fun to be in awe at His greatness on top of San Luis.

Thanks, Wade, for all the planning and organizing you put into the trip. I enjoyed seeing how such trips should be done.

Thanks for appreciating the effort! If I can make it through 54 14ers without major incident - that will be awesome! But the next best bet will be to be as prepared as possible should things ever go wrong.

Preparation and Prayers - that has to be a winning combination! :)
